Building costs.
Construction costs vary widely depending on the location of the construction site, the design of the building,
the materials used and the finishes. Generally speaking, the Out Islands are much less expensive than either Nassau or Freeport, Grand Bahama.
Costs per square foot of a finished house can be as low as $65 for low cost housing to as high as $400 for a luxury home with the finest finishes.
The average cost of building a home of decent standard seems to be about $200 per square foot.

Building codes.
Very strict building codes apply throughout the entire Bahamas island chain. Hurricane proof requirements are very high indeed.
One example is the use of 2x8 foot beams (opposed to the standard American of 2x4s)
Here on the islands, building standards are much higher than in South Florida.
The majority of homes here are of concrete block or poured concrete construction and are built to meet the highest building codes in the Caribbean.
Inspectors will periodically check on the work of foundations, electricians, plumbers, everything.
One final thing about building in the Bahamas.
Remember to always chill out, sip a beer or two and relax.
This, after all, is the Bahamas, some things can, and without doubt will, take lots longer than you originally plan for, enjoy yourself.
